Are Fountain Pens Nibs Universal: Are nibs interchangeable?

#5 & #6 Fountain Pen Nibs Aligned Title

Let’s face it: there is a learning curve you have to get over when it comes to fountain pens. One of the things you have to familiarize yourself with are the nibs. In this post, I went around gathering information on the interchangeability of fountain pen nibs.

Are Fountain Pen Nibs Interchangeable?

Not all fountain pen nibs are interchangeable. Typically, modern sized #4, #5 or #6 nibs will fit into some fountain pen models, but that is not true with all models. Some brands have made their nibs interchangeable, but only with their models.

This means that fountain pen models which use the modern sized nibs will be able to interchange or swap their nibs with the same sized nib.

For example, a Jinhao X450 fountain pen uses a #6 nib. If anything were to happen to that nib, like if it were damaged or maybe you want to change how thick the ink flow is, you can try finding another #6 nib that you can replace it with.

For fountain pen models that don’t use the modern sized nibs, depending on the model, you can only replace it with the same nib or you’ll have to find other models that can fit your nib.

For example, LAMY fountain pens do not fit the #4/#5 or #6 sized nibs, but they do allow you to swap your nibs depending on the model. If you want to swap the fine nib of your Safari for the medium nib of your Vista, you are free to do so. You are, however, not allowed to swap your LAMY nib with any other brand.

If you want to try swapping nibs between brands, do so knowing that it probably won’t work properly, and you have probably ruined your fountain pen.

Fountain pen brands who do not follow the standard size of nibs, do so for many reasons.

A valid reason for doing this is that they shape the nib to better suit the feeder. It increases the quality of writing, and ensures the flow is perfect for that model. Swapping nibs from brand to brand can also create complications with the warranty, quality, replacements and such.

It is best to do some research on the model of the fountain pen you are getting, and whether they follow the standard size or if they can interchange their nibs with other models of the brand.

What is a #4, #5, or #6 Fountain Pen Nib?

The #4, #5, & #6 nibs are the standard sizes of modern fountain pen nibs. The number reflects how wide the base of the nib is, meaning a #4 nib is 4mm in diameter, and so on. Not all models follow these sizes, this also true for vintage fountain pens.

The size of the nib(different from the size of the tip) does not affect the writing whatsoever. So you can expect the same thickness from a #5 fine nib, and a #6 fine nib.

The #4 sized nib is also not as widely used. Some models of fountain pens still use it, but these are few and far in between.

The only real difference is the measurement at the base of the nib itself.

However, if you are using replacement nibs, you should also know that it will not be as perfect a fit as the original one had been. The feed might not align as well, and the writing might change from what it was when it was brand new.

Of course, the changes are minimal but you might wonder about the slight difference.

This is also because the replacement nibs weren’t designed for the specific pen and might not wrap around the feed as well as the original nib did.

Here’s a useful video for for showing the differences of each.

How Do You Change or Remove a Fountain Pen Nib and Feed?

Removing the feed and the nib of a fountain pen differs depending on the model. Some methods will require you to unscrew the feed, while others will simply require you to pull the feed and nib hard enough to separate it from the rest of them pen.

Here’s a very good video on how to remove or change the feed for a majority of fountain pens.

Contrary to the thumbnail, not all pens will need a rubber grip to remove the feed/nib. However, it is good practice to do so and will reduce the risk of you damaging your nib or feed.

It is also encouraged and recommended that you clean out the pen first to reduce the ink splatter on your hands.. or any other unfortunate place (like your pants, not like this is from personal experience while I was experimenting with my Jinhao X450).

Which Popular Fountain Brands Have Interchangeable Nibs?

Not all fountain pen brands are the same. In fact, among their models there could be significant differences, as well. Some will be able to have their nibs interchangeable, some won’t.

I’ve compiled some brands that do have interchangeable nibs among their models. I will also do my best to list them, but remember to do your own research as well as things may have change since the writing of this article.

Take note, this does not mean that the brands listed below will fit #4, #5, or #6 sized nibs, rather their nibs are interchangeable or swappable between a set of models within their own brand. Note that changing, altering, or any other tinkering with your fountain pen is your responsibility.

You can easily remove or swap LAMY nibs by sliding it off of the feeder. While it is generally possible to do it by hand, it is recommended that you use a rubber grip or tape to avoid damaging the nib.

Here’s a very helpful video on how to change LAMY nibs:

Are Parker Nibs Interchangeable?

Are Mont Blanc Nibs Interchangeable?

Mont Blanc nibs are generally not interchangeable. If you wish to replace the nib, you will have to do so by replacing it with the nib of the same model and with the use of certain tools.

This may not apply to some models, based on my research, but generally swapping their nibs takes expertise and tools that a casual fountain pen user will not have the knowledge to properly use.

Are Pilot Nibs Interchangeable?

Pilot fountain pens have some models where their nibs can be interchanged, however, they do not encourage this and it will probably void the warranty, or affect the quality of writing.

I wouldn’t want you to buy a #5 nib when your model only accepts a #6.

Do Fountain Pen Nibs Wear Out?

Fountain pen nibs do wear out with use, but they are typically designed to last decades. Many fountain pens have lasted years without their nibs needing replacement, as long as the fountain pen is well maintained.

If you want to replace your nib because you’re a heavy user and you’re worried that it might give up on you, don’t. In fact, fountain pens are a common hand-me-down item. Also, despite many decades going past, many antique pens are still around the market to this day.
